Tony Carey—Executive Director
"Mr. Tony" was a founding Board member and is our school's current Executive Director. Originally from England, Mr. Tony was transferred to the United States in 1978 by Swiss multinational AGIE s.a. He brings more than 30 years of business and managerial experience to our school.
The Careys are long term residents of Frederick where Mr. Tony also sits on the Town Council. Along with 5th grader Nick, the Carey family likes to travel, and are long time Rockies fans.
Paul W. Trautwein—Secondary Principal
Mr. Trautwein has been involved in education since 1987. He has taught in the areas of orchestra, band, choir, general music, and computer technology and in grades kindergarten through twelve. Mr. Trautwein’s orchestras have been successful in many state, national and international competitions.
In addition to his regular assignments Mr. Trautwein has also directed musicals, led a juggling club, directed madrigal dinners, and founded two FIRST Robotics teams (Surrey Robotics and the Virtual Commandos in Loveland). Mr. Trautwein’s robotics teams have competed regionally, nationally and internationally and have won several awards. Mr. Trautwein continues to teach as a Chamber Music Coach with the Youth Orchestra of the Rockies.
Dr. Carol Marsh —Special Education Resource
Dr. Marsh has extensive experience at all levels ranging from preschool to the college in a variety of roles and settings. She has a Ph.D. in Teacher Education/Staff Development from Colorado State University, a Master’s Degree in Special Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from San Jose State University. She has professional licensure in both elementary education and special education (moderate needs).
After 6 years of teaching elementary math methods at the University of Northern Colorado and coordinating graduate licensure programs, Dr. Marsh is looking forward to returning to the classroom full-time to again teach special education. She has many years of teaching experience, particularly with students with learning disabilities in a resource room setting. Dr. Marsh especially enjoys helping parents and teachers promote math understanding for all students.
Kelly Kurz—Counselor
Mrs. Kurz is excited to be a part of Carbon Valley Academy. She has eleven years experience in Hospice Social Work and was a part of a "pediatric team" that worked primarily with kids and families in Hospice. She was humbled by the kids ability to cope and thrive through difficult situations and was thrilled when the opportunity to work with kids was available at CVA.
Mrs. Kurz is a Colorado native and grew up in Erie. She attended CSU and received a Bachelors degree in Social Work. Mrs. Kurz lives with her husband, a Science Teacher, and two young daughters in her hometown of Erie.
Stacy Judson—Instructional Data Specialist
Mrs. Judson previously served as a paraprofessional at
Rocky Mountain Christian Academy. She was very
enthusiastic about being on board with CVA when we
opened, beginning our first year as an Instructional
Assistant, helping with administrative needs and
coordinating the NWEA MAP testing. In 2006/2007, Mrs.
Judson took over the position she currently holds,
coordinating the logistics of CSAP and NWEA MAP
assessments. She also works with teachers and
instructional assistants on using data to inform
instructional practice.
Mrs. Judson and husband Mike reside in Frederick and stay very busy with their six children, three of whom attend CVA. One attends Frederick High School, and the“baby” will begin kindergarten at CVA in the fall of 2008. Their oldest is married and has made Mrs. Judson a very happy grandma of two. Is there time for anything else?
Johnnie Marie Echer—English
Before entering the field of education, Mrs. Echer was a public relations and advertising expert. She worked as a personal banker for a southern Colorado bank before becoming the testing coordinator for Otero Jr. College in La Junta, CO. She then became interested in teaching and took a job in the Manzanola School District teaching seventh and eighth grades. While teaching full time, she has been working on her Colorado teacher's license. Mrs. Echer brings expertise in writing and integrating Colorado content in the classroom.
Owen Cegielski—History
History has been Mr. Cegielski's favorite subject since grade school, and he brings that passion to his classroom. Mr. Cegielski pursued his calling early, attending three Chicago-area colleges, including: Loyola University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and DePaul. He earned a B.S. in Anthropology, a B.A. in history, a M.A. in history, and a professional teacher's license.
From 2001-2005, he taught World History, U.S. history and Law at Lincoln Park High School. He then moved to beautiful Colorado to enjoy the great outdoors and to continue teaching at Peak to Peak Charter School, where he taught World History, Human Geography and Civics at the standard and AP levels. He started teaching at Carbon Valley Academy in January 2008 and has enjoyed working with the students!
Mr. Cegielski describes his approach to teaching history as innovative because he incorporates PowerPoint and other technologies in the classroom as well as requires students to apply critical thinking to complex historical issues. On a daily basis, students are treated to period music, award-winning videos from the Discovery Channel, primary source analysis, and fun educational review games, including PowerPoint Jeopardy! The students and Mr. Cegielski are having a lot of fun as they learn and grow together. He looks forward to working more closely with the Carbon Valley community!
Claudia Sigman—Math
Ms. Sigman is pleased to join to Carbon Valley Academy faculty. She has been both a middle school and high school teacher for the last ten years and is happy to finally be able to teach in her own neighborhood. Ms. Sigman lives here in Frederick and is a part of our community.
Along with the students she sees at school, Ms. Sigman has three children of her own; Spencer is 7, Connor is 5 and Samantha is 4. She loves being a mom and enjoys the challenges of raising three kids!
Ms. Sigman strives to create a unique educational atmosphere in her classroom. She strives to promote an atmosphere of acceptance and security. This ensures that all students feel comfortable to ask their questions and have a sense of belonging to the CVA family.
Mr. Dave Floodeen comes to Carbon Valley Secondary Academy with a wide background at many levels of education. He is a retired Naval Officer and former Navy pilot. In his 20 years of Naval Service, he taught numerous programs and workshops. His last assignment was at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) where he served as the Deputy Dean of Students and the Director of Student Affairs. Following retirement from Naval service, Mr. Floodeen joined the faculty at NPS as an Asst. Professor of Computer Science. There he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science. He was also the Associate Chair of the Computer Science Department and served as the Executive Director of the Software Engineering Automation Center, a research institute at NPS. It was in this last capacity that he developed the Naval Postgraduate School’s first fully accredited online degree program.
For the last three years, Mr. Floodeen has focused on secondary education. He was the Department Chair for a High School Mathematics department and taught courses at all levels of Math and Science. He has taught Earth Science, Physics and Chemistry and Mathematics from pre-algebra to AP Calculus. He is a certified AP Calculus teacher and adjunct faculty with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs as part of their CU Succeed program. As a member of that program, he teaches dual credit courses that earn both high school credit and college credit for students. This gives high school students the opportunity to gain college experience at a greatly reduced tuition rate.
Mr. Floodeen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University, a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and PhD(ABD) in Software Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. Mr Floodeen is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Education Association (NEA).
Mr. Floodeen enjoys woodworking and traveling with his wife (especially now that his youngest son has graduated High School). He is very excited about teaching the students here at Carbon Valley Secondary Academy.
Damian Tate—Technology
Mr. Tate is very excited to be apart of CVSA. He is in his sixth year of teaching and is very pleased to be teaching in the St. Vrain area. Mr. Tate was raised in Longmont and still lives in the area. He graduated from Longmont High School. After high school, he attended the University of Northern Colorado where he received a BA in Human Communications with an emphasis in Elementary Education. In December of 2007, Mr. Tate graduated with a Master's degree in Information and Learning Technologies (K-12) from the University of Colorado-Denver. Previously, Mr. Tate taught for three years at Chappelow K-8 Arts and Literacy Magnet School in Greeley and then two years at Belle Creek K-8 Charter School in Brighton.
Mr. Tate was married in 2003 to a friend he met in high school. Since then, he and his wife have expanded their family by two sons, one bird, and two dogs. Mr. Tate enjoys spending time with his family, playing baseball, basketball, and volleyball, and spending time in the mountains.
Mr. Tate is excited to grow in his career as a teacher and help the students at CVSA learn about past and current technologies that affect today's society. Furthermore, Mr. Tate and the other teachers at CVSA plan to integrate the content area classes with his technology class. It should be a great year!
Charles O’Connor—Music
Mr. O’Connor was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. There were seven children in his family. At a very early age Mr. O'Connor dreamed of becoming a teacher. As a boy he studied cello with the first chair cellist of the Chicago Symphony and later became a member of their youth symphony. He also studied conducting with several renowned symphony conductors. While in high school his parents died. He put himself through college. Mr. O'Connor earned an Associate’s Degree from Chicago City College, a Bachelor’s Degree from Loyola University, and later this year he will be earning his Masters Degree from Regis University.
This is his 19th year of teaching. Mrs. O”Connor is a registered nurse from Ireland. The O’Connors have been married for 16 years. They have a 13 year old daughter who is a ballerina and a pianist. Mr. O'Connor loves hiking with his family. He has climber the 50 highest peaks in Colorado. He also loves to read classic literature and play chess.
