Tony Carey—Executive Director
"Mr. Tony" was a founding Board member and is our school's current Executive Director. Originally from England, Mr. Tony was transferred to the United States in 1978 by Swiss multinational AGIE s.a. He brings more than 30 years of business and managerial experience to our school.
The Careys are long term residents of Frederick where Mr. Tony also sits on the Town Council. Along with 5th grader Nick, the Carey family likes to travel, and are long time Rockies fans.
Terry Walsh—Secondary Principal

Mr. Wlash has been leading Pre-AP Math workshops for the last three years, after a 32 year career as a mathematics teacher and administrator in two suburban Chicago high schools. He has led Math Vertical Teams, Analyzing Data, Accumulation, & Problem Solving Pre-AP workshops from Delaware to New Mexico, and Minnesota to Florida. In addition to his work in schools, Mr. Walsh has presented at local, state, national, and international mathematics conferences and was one of the founding editors of Texas Instruments’ graphing calculator newsletter, EightySomething!
After retiring, he mentored student teachers of mathematics from Illinois State University until he relocated to Loveland, Colorado in the summer of 2007. During these years, Mr. Walsh worked with Dr. Harvey Silver and John Brunsting to write the educational bestseller Math Tools, Grades 3-12: 64 Ways to Differentiate Instruction and Increase Student Engagement. Shortly after settling in Colorado, Mr. Walsh served as the Secondary Math Instructional Coach for Fort Lupton Schools for the 2007-2008 school year.
Since moving to Colorado, Mr. Walsh has taken up fly fishing & lake kayaking, continues to enjoy photography, and continues his attempts to play golf. Together ,Mr. Walsh and his wife, Sue, enjoy hiking the many stretches of mountainous terrain Colorado has to offer and visiting their three children in New York City (Manhattan); Las Vegas, Nevada; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Brandi Wilson—Business Operations/Human Resources
Mrs. Wilson worked almost 8 years at the Denver 7UP Bottling Company as an Operations Assistant which included everything from cashier and receptionist to ordering product and Human Resources. She took 6 years off to raise her three children, two of which attend CVA. She loves her job at CVA, (there’s never a dull moment), and has so much respect for the whole staff and faculty, she truly feels blessed to be a part of the CVA family.
Mrs. Wilson, her husband Lee and their kids enjoy going fishing and exploring Colorado during the summer. They’re also big NASCAR, Av’s and Bronco fans.
Janet Enderle–Secondary Secretary
Stephanie Kajcienski—Student Services
Mrs. Kajcienski is a native of Colorado and attended Metropolitan State College for Marketing. Before coming to Carbon Valley Academy, she spent five years working in Children’s Ministries. Her past experience also includes customer service, office administration, and sales. Mrs. Kajcienski takes care of CVA’s Student Services. She tracks attendance and enrollment, heads up the lunch program, and is our health clerk.
Dr. Carol Marsh—Coordinator of Special Education
Dr. Marsh has extensive experience at all levels ranging from preschool to the college in a variety of roles and settings. She has a Ph.D. in Teacher Education/Staff Development from Colorado State University, a Master’s Degree in Special Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from San Jose State University. She has professional licensure in both elementary education and special education (moderate needs).
After 6 years of teaching elementary math methods at the University of Northern Colorado and coordinating graduate licensure programs, Dr. Marsh is looking forward to returning to the classroom full-time to again teach special education. She has many years of teaching experience, particularly with students with learning disabilities in a resource room setting. Dr. Marsh especially enjoys helping parents and teachers promote math understanding for all students.
Kelly Kurz—Counselor
Mrs. Kurz is excited to be a part of Carbon Valley Academy. She has eleven years experience in Hospice Social Work and was a part of a "pediatric team" that worked primarily with kids and families in Hospice. She was humbled by the kids ability to cope and thrive through difficult situations and was thrilled when the opportunity to work with kids was available at CVA.
Mrs. Kurz is a Colorado native and grew up in Erie. She attended CSU and received a Bachelors degree in Social Work. Mrs. Kurz lives with her husband, a Science Teacher, and two young daughters in her hometown of Erie.
Hannah Reese—Language Arts/English
Ms. Reese will be teaching Language Arts/English. This past year she has been teaching English Language at the Lingua Forum Academy in Seoul, South Korea. Originally from Kansas, Ms. Reese will be moving to Colorado with her husband as he attends CSU next year. She graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri with a Bachelor in Arts in English and Secondary Education. She will also help rollout our new READ 180 reading program next year.
Owen Cegielski—History
History has been Mr. Cegielski's favorite subject since grade school, and he brings that passion to his classroom. Mr. Cegielski pursued his calling early, attending three Chicago-area colleges, including: Loyola University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and DePaul. He earned a B.S. in Anthropology, a B.A. in history, a M.A. in history, and a professional teacher's license.
From 2001-2005, he taught World History, U.S. history and Law at Lincoln Park High School. He then moved to beautiful Colorado to enjoy the great outdoors and to continue teaching at Peak to Peak Charter School, where he taught World History, Human Geography and Civics at the standard and AP levels. He started teaching at Carbon Valley Academy in January 2008 and has enjoyed working with the students!
Mr. Cegielski describes his approach to teaching history as innovative because he incorporates PowerPoint and other technologies in the classroom as well as requires students to apply critical thinking to complex historical issues. On a daily basis, students are treated to period music, award-winning videos from the Discovery Channel, primary source analysis, and fun educational review games, including PowerPoint Jeopardy! The students and Mr. Cegielski are having a lot of fun as they learn and grow together. He looks forward to working more closely with the Carbon Valley community!
Ron Paoletti—Science
Mr. Paoletti will be teaching science. After taking last year off from teaching to help his wife start a new business in Longmont, he has decided to return to education. Mr. Paoletti most recently taught at Estes Park High School where he taught integrated science and advanced Earth Science. Mr. Paoletti brings a passion for science and the environment to CVSA.
David Floodeen—Math
Mr. Dave Floodeen comes to Carbon Valley Secondary Academy with a wide background at many levels of education. He is a retired Naval Officer and former Navy pilot. In his 20 years of Naval Service, he taught numerous programs and workshops. His last assignment was at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) where he served as the Deputy Dean of Students and the Director of Student Affairs. Following retirement from Naval service, Mr. Floodeen joined the faculty at NPS as an Asst. Professor of Computer Science. There he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science. He was also the Associate Chair of the Computer Science Department and served as the Executive Director of the Software Engineering Automation Center, a research institute at NPS. It was in this last capacity that he developed the Naval Postgraduate School’s first fully accredited online degree program.
For the last three years, Mr. Floodeen has focused on secondary education. He was the Department Chair for a High School Mathematics department and taught courses at all levels of Math and Science. He has taught Earth Science, Physics and Chemistry and Mathematics from pre-algebra to AP Calculus. He is a certified AP Calculus teacher and adjunct faculty with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs as part of their CU Succeed program. As a member of that program, he teaches dual credit courses that earn both high school credit and college credit for students. This gives high school students the opportunity to gain college experience at a greatly reduced tuition rate.
Mr. Floodeen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University, a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and PhD(ABD) in Software Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. Mr Floodeen is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Education Association (NEA).
Mr. Floodeen enjoys woodworking and traveling with his wife (especially now that his youngest son has graduated High School). He is very excited about teaching the students here at Carbon Valley Secondary Academy.
Emily Fausch—Resource and Team Teaching Language Arts and Math
Shelby Wax—Business and Technology
Mrs. Wax will be teaching Business and Technology. She comes to us from Northglenn High School where she was the head of the Business Department and the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) advisor. Mrs. Wax has earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration along with a minor in Japanese and an Asian Studies Certification from Colorado State University. She also studied Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado and has earned a Master's of Education degree from Colorado State University. Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Wax worked for companies such as USA Today and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Mrs. Wax holds a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is currently studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Infinite Mixed Martial Arts.

Charles O’Connor—Music
Mr. O’Connor was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. There were seven children in his family. At a very early age Mr. O'Connor dreamed of becoming a teacher. As a boy he studied cello with the first chair cellist of the Chicago Symphony and later became a member of their youth symphony. He also studied conducting with several renowned symphony conductors. While in high school his parents died. He put himself through college. Mr. O'Connor earned an Associate’s Degree from Chicago City College, a Bachelor’s Degree from Loyola University, and later this year he will be earning his Masters Degree from Regis University.
This is his 19th year of teaching. Mrs. O”Connor is a registered nurse from Ireland. The O’Connors have been married for 16 years. They have a 13 year old daughter who is a ballerina and a pianist. Mr. O'Connor loves hiking with his family. He has climber the 50 highest peaks in Colorado. He also loves to read classic literature and play chess.
Jared Hansberry—Physical Education
